GUWAHATI: The Department of Geography, Gauhati University, formally opened two newly-built academic facilities — Advanced Study and Resource Cell and Geography Seminar Hall on August 24 in honour of Dr Manmohan Das, former Professor and Head of Geography, Gauhati University — with generous funding by alumni of GU Dr Jitendra K Baruah, MD and Dr Gita R Baruah, MD, Brookfield (Wisconsin), USA.

Former Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Dr GN Talukdar, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, opened the Advanced Study and Resource Cell and addressed the gathering. Prof Manmohan Das opened the Geography Seminar Hall and shared his feelings as one of the guests of honour.

Prof Madhushree Das, Head of Department and Dean, Faculty of Science, presided over the function. Members of the geography fraternity, including teachers, students and research scholars of GU and other institutions, and officers and faculty members of various departments of GU attended the function.

Prof Bimal K Kar briefed all present about the programme and briefly introduced Prof Manmohan Das and the donors Dr JK Baruah and Dr Gita R Baruah. While opening the visiting lecture programme, Dr MC Bhuyan, former Registrar, GU, who graced the function as a guest of honour, emphasized the need for orientation of the discipline geography towards addressing emerging issues. The invited visiting speaker Dr GK Panda, Emeritus Professor of Geography, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar delivered his address on disaster management policies.

In the meeting, Dr GN Talukdar released the book "Changing Environmental Systems and Emerging Challenges" edited by Prof Ashok K Bora and Prof Madhushree Das.
