AIUDF threatens legal action, Facebook closes Aminul's pages

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Jan 17: Facebook authorities have closed three Facebook pages of AIUDF organizational general secretary Aminul Islam, said AIUDF general secretary Haider Hussain Bora.

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, Bora said, "We expressed serious resentment over the stop of Facebook pages run by Adv. Aminul Islam, who is officiating now as the general secretary (organization) and chief spokesperson of the Party. For obvious reason Aminul Islam, has to interact with thousands of followers and party workers.

"Being a conscious citizen and responsible office-bearer of the AUIDF, Aminul Islam often raises voice against injustice and misdeed in the state as well as the ruling government. Such, straight forwardness may not match the ruling party and hence is taking Aminul Islam as the target. As a result, the Facebook page maintained by Aminul Islam, in the account Facebook.com/aminulislamAIUDF got blocked on 25th December, 2020. Again, the second page account Facebook.com/AminulAIUDF got inoperative on the 11th January, 2021 and the third Facebook.com/office of Aminul went inoperative for 13th January, 2021."

Bora further said, "Aminul Ialam has been quite vocal about human rights and other social issues in Assam. His spontaneous and fearless nature of putting a question to the current BJP government in Assam made him popular on social media. As a result, the IT cell of the BJP has been relentlessly targeting Aminul Islam to curb his reach on social media. "It is evident among people that Islam holds the belief of the Asomiya community that includes all religions of Assam and it is against BJP's agenda of divide and rule. Therefore, BJP repeatedly targets Aminul Islam without any good reason.

"Therefore, we demand that Facebook to provide a valid rationale and evidence to support its decision to remove Islam's Facebook pages. And if not, then Facebook should restore his pages. The BJP should also stop doing these unethical works of defaming Aminul Islam. If Facebook doesn't agree to our demands, we will be compelled to take legal action against it."
