Ajit Das kidnapping case: Accused policeman shot at during escape attempt

GUWAHATI: Fancy Bazar Outpost Constable Raj Babu Singh, who was arrested in connection to the abduction of businessman Ajit Das, was shot at after he tried to flee from police custody.

The incident took place when the police took Singh to Gheguwa Hill in Morigaon district for a follow-up investigation of the kidnapping case.

Assam DGP (Director General of Police) GP Singh on Tuesday morning informed that the accused tried to flee from police custody and while trying to escape, the police had to use 'reasonable force' to prevent him from escaping.

The accused has sustained a single bullet injury on his leg and was admitted to Morigaon Civil Hospital. Later, he was referred to the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital).

It is to be noted that, Das was abducted by a group of four persons from his house in the Kalibari area near Guwahati Railway Station on June 23. In this regard, a case (217/21 U/S 448/365/34 IPC) was registered by his family members at the Latasil Police Station. He was rescued on June 28.

Two others, namely Sanju Bordoloi and Satya Bordoloi were also arrested by the police for their involvement with this kidnapping case on Monday evening.

To date, as many as six persons have been arrested in connection to Das' abduction. Apart from Singh, Sanju Bordoloi and Satya Bordoloi, the other three accused are — Jagiroad PS Home Guard Suraj Pator, Forest Guard Battalion personnel Jiten Bailung, and a local of Gheguwa hill, Maneswar Das.

Meanwhile, the prime accused Singh Siddhu is still on the run and the police are yet to find out the reason behind the abduction. They are also grilling Ajit Das at the Palasbari Police Station.
