GUWAHATI: The Anusuchit Jati Yuba Chatra Parishad, Asom (AJYCPA) on Tuesday staged a protest at Chachal in Guwahati against the alleged deprivation of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and to demand modifications in the criteria of issuing caste certificates under Mission Bhumiputra.

AJYCPA general secretary Jitu Kakati said, “The government has claimed that the demilitation of assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Assam was done to safeguard the interests of the Assamese people. According to the final delimitation list, the Barpeta and Naoboicha constituencies have been reserved for SCs. So basically, the government wants the SCs to wage a political fight in Miya-dominated constituencies.

“The long-standing issues of the SCs have not been resolved and scholarship to SC students is not paid regularly. We demand a 100% hike in the scholarship amount and the scholarships should be paid regularly.”

He further said that under Mission Bhumiputra, so far 2,90,055 SC certificates have been issued. “However, it has come to our notice that there are loopholes in the rules and regulations which have been set by the government for students to apply for caste certificates online. Some non-SC people are taking advantage of these loopholes to get caste certificates. Around 1 lakh non-SC people have got caste certificates in this manner. We demand that the criteria of issuing caste cerificates under Mission Bhumiputra must be modified. Before issuing caste certificate to anyone, the authorities concerned must verify data based on the 1951 NRC, voters’ list of 1950 and 1966-1971, and the 1950-1971 caste census, and also take the approval of the registered SC bodies,” he said.
