All Assam Chutia Students’ Union hunger strike enters third day

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 22 : The ongoing indefinite hunger strike by the leaders and activists of All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU) to pressurize Dispur to fulfill their demands entered the third day on Sunday.

The AACSU said that the hunger strike will not end till the State Government comes out with concrete assurances to concede to its demands of granting ST status to Chutia community, naming the Bogibeel bridge over the Brahmaputra as Birangana Sadhani Setu and declaring the Biranga Sadhani Divas observed in April as government holiday.

Even though the member secretary of State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare Lakhya Konwar on Saturday went to the venue of hunger strike in front of historic Dighalipukhuri in the city and conveyed that the Sarbananda Sonowal government is sincere to concede to the AACSU’s demands, the agitationists remained indifferent and vowed to continue their strike.

The AACSU leaders made it clear that unless the State Government comes out with concrete and time bound assurances to fulfill its demands they will continue their fast. Health condition of many of the AACSU leaders have deteriorated as their fasting entered the third day on Sunday.
