All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC): Law and order collapse in Assam

GUWAHATI: All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC), Assam Chapter, president Gauravv Somani came down heavily on the State government for, what he said, the collapse of the law-and-order situation in the state.

Citing a few examples of the deterioration of law and order in the state, Somani said in a press release that after the recent incident of extortion of money in Sivasagar, another incident has come to light. A Nalbari businessman, Sohan Agarwalla, got a threat to his life from a few land mafia members who forcibly closed down his shop, the release said. Sohan Agarwalla is the owner of Amrit Electricals in Nalbari town.

"Sohan Agarwalla purchased the shop for Rs 22 lakh in 2014. A few land mafias came to his shop on March 22 and asked him to vacate. Refusing to adhere to their demand for vacating the shop, the land mafia forcefully got the owner and the staff out of the shop and put a lock on it. Sohan Agarwal, under the circumstances, lodged an FIR in the Nalbari Police Station on March 23, 2023," the press release said, adding that the land mafia threatened him inside the police station of dire consequences and ‘kidnapping his son from the school if he doesn't withdraw the FIR immediately’.

Under pressure, Sohan Agarwal had to withdraw the FIR on March 28, 2023, the release said. The release further alleged that Sohan Agarwal filed an FIR in Nalbari Police Station on April 19, but he got no cooperation from the police, and he continues to get threats to his life. "Hence, under the circumstances, he had to withdraw the FIR again on April 22," the release said.

Somani said that law and order in the state have gone from bad to worse. "There is no police accountability, and people are left to fight their own battle. Things are sorted out and addressed only when highlighted on media and social platforms," Somani said in the release.
