GUWAHATI: The All Kalita Students' Union (AKSU) has decided to field candidates in the forthcoming Assam Assembly election in 2021. The students' body had to take such a decision since the successive governments in the State paid no heed to the demands of the Kalita community.

The AKSU took the decision at its emergent executive meeting held on June 30 at Kaliabor.

In a statement, AKSU general secretary Dipankar Kalita said, "We're going to field candidates in Nalbari, Dharmapur, Borkhetri, Rangiya, Kamalpur, Hajo, Patacharkuchi, Bhabanipur, Palasbari, West Guwahati, East Guwahati, Dispur, Sipajhar, Tezpur and Amguri as independents.

"The long-standing demands of the Kalita community are according ST status to the community, formation of a Kalita Development Council and formation of the Pagjyotishpur Autonomous Council. However, none of the successive governments paid any heed to these three demands.'' He said that the executive meeting with Nabajit Barman in the chair formed a three-member election committee. He said that the Union has requested people willing to contest the election to send their applications before August 30, 2020.
