All Kamrup (Metro) District Students’ Union Pay Tributes to Assam Movement Martyrs

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The All Kamrup (Metro) District Students’ Union on Thursday lit earthen lamps in different parts of the district to pay tributes 855 martyrs of the historic Assam movement. The movement culminated in the signing of the Assam Accord on the midnight of August 15 in 1985.

A press communiqué issued by the president and general secretary of the students’ union Kusha Rangpi and Dibyajyoti Medhi respectively expressed serious concern over alleged apathy and casual approach of both Delhi and Dispur to implement each and every clause of the Assam Accord even 34 years after its signing. The students’ leaders appealed to the Centre and State Government to implement the Assam Accord in a time-bound manner. “Non-implementation of Assam Accord will pose a serious threat to identity of indigenous people of the State,” Medhi said.
