GUWAHATI: According to the annual crime reports, an unfortunate rise has been observed in the city. The 20 police stations under Guwahati Police Commissionerate have had 4232 registered theft cases in 2018 alone. The maximum number of theft cases are registered under Dispur police station which leaves much for speculation, as the area is one of the most highly monitored routes in the state. Violence can be curbed under swift police action alone and the acceleration in crimes has raised many red flags among the citizens with increased distrust and chaos at large.

In 2018, 842 theft cases were registered under Dispur police station, making it the highest area of theft followed by Jalukbari police station, which has a reported 489 cases and Paltan Bazaar police station, which has a number of 433 reported cases. The number of people arrested under these cases was 160 by Dispur police station, 74 by Jalukbari police station and 87 by Paltan Bazaar police station respectively with a total of 956 arrests made by the 20 police stations.

Murder cases have accelerated to 96 in the city in 2018 with 12 cases reported in Jalukbari followed by 10 cases each in Basistha and Sonapur. Although the trepidation among Guwahatians is mounting, however, 66 arrests have also been made in this regard.
