APCC Moves State Election Commission Against Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday moved the State Election Commission, Assam seeking the latter’s intervention in the case of alleged violation of election code of conduct by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Principal of Deomornoi HS School Akhoy Kumar Nath.

A delegation of APCC comprising senior leaders Dr. Zoinath Sarma and Ranjan Bora, submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commissioner HN Bora alleging that both Sarbananda Sonowal and Principal had used Deomornoi HS School in Darrang district for political purpose.

According to allegations leveled by the APCC, an election rally for the ensuing Panchayat polls was held at the playground of Deomornoi HS School on Monday and the Chief Minister attended the rally. The APCC stated that the Principal ordered cancellation of all classes of his school from 12 noon on Monday and asked students to participate in the election rally.

The APCC alleged that the Monday’s incident was a clear case of a government school being used for political purpose and election. It is a clear case a violation of poll code of conduct. The Congress accused the Principal of directly involving himself in politics and electioneering.
