GUWAHATI: The stage is set for conducting of elections to 80 municipal boards across the State on March 6.

Talking to The Sentinel, Secretary of the Assam State Election Commission (SEC) Pranjit Gogoi disclosed on Wednesday, "All arrangements have been completed for holding the elections. Our priority is to ensure free, fair and safe elections."

He added that polling in various polling stations would start from 8 am on March 6 and continue till 4 pm. Around 10,000 Government employees would be engaged on election duty on the polling day.

Assam Police is looking after the security arrangements for the civic body elections, he said.

Gogoi added that while Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) would be used for the first time in the State for municipal board elections, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slip facility will not be available.

The Election Commission of India (EC) has provided the EVMs from the State of Bihar, he said.

Meanwhile, campaigning for the municipal board elections will end on Friday, March 4.

Counting of votes will take place on March 9.

The total number of candidates in the poll fray is 2,532.

The Dibrugarh municipal board has the largest electorate with 1,17,690 voters in its 22 wards. There will be 129 polling stations in Dibrugarh.
