Artificial flood at Jorabat

Artificial flood at Jorabat

OUR CORRESPONDENT

DIMORIA, July 9: Located just a few kilometers away from Guwahati city, Jorabat has been hitting the news for wrong reasons; more particularly during the summer. The hardship caused by recurrent artificial flood has become inevitable for the residents in and around Jorabat and the vehicles plying along the stretch. The situation seems aggravating following the conversion of NH-37 into four lane highway. It is alleged that due to the negligence and the unscientific method adopted by the NHAI while improving the road has been the main reason behind the occurrence of artificial flood at Jorabat.

Notably, on July 6, the Kamrup (M) district Deputy Commissioner who was accompanied by NHAI officials and Circle officer, Sonapur took stock of the situation and gathered opinions and suggestion from the locals to step up some preventive measures. After conducting a meeting, the DC strictly directed the project implementation unit of the NHAI to speed up the construction of drains at the area. He also ordered the Circle Officer, Sonapur to clear the illegal construction erected over the drain which has been either reducing the shape or blocking the smooth flow of rain water in the area.

However, before initiating anything in this regard, an evening shower on Monday flooded the area again for which hundred of vehicles, both commercial and domestic along with bikers and commoners were stranded for hours. Moreover, lack of retaining wall in certain areas is also causing the artificial flood as the rain water from the periphery hills of Meghalaya flows to the downstream through Jorabat.
