ASM Expresses Reservation on Designs of Borduwa Than

GUWAHATI: The AsomSattraMahasabha (ASM) has expressed some reservations on the design of, what it says, the otherwise sincere initiative taken for the development and beautification of BorduwaThan in Nagaon district.

Talking to The Sentinel, ASM general secretary Kusum Kumar Mahnata said, "This is a sincere initiative from Dispur. The previous governments at Dispur had scant regard for the development of Borduwa Than. For being the place of birth of MohapurushSrimantaSankardev, this Than has a special significance.

"The State government has rolled out its Rs 188-crore project for the development and beautification of the Than, in line with the Golden Temple in Punjab. However, a debate has been stirred up in circles concerned in the State after the design of the project was made public. We too have some reservations on the model of the project.

"The model properly depicts cymbals (bortaal) and drums (khol) when viewed from outside. In fact, they (cymbals and drums) are houses made for some purposes. The Guru Ashan (mentor's seat) is also depicted right when it is viewed from outside. However, from within, it's a guest house. Cymbals, drums and the mentor's seat are quite sacrosanct. At all cost, their sanctity is inviolable.

"Had Vaishnavite scholars taken into confidence while designing the model, such loopholes could have been plugged. We were also not consulted while making the design. It's not too late to correct the design and go ahead with the development and beautification work of the Than at the 130 bigha land made free from encroachers. It has to be done by this government. It's imperative to go ahead with the construction work as leaving the land without doing anything will only tempt encroachers." The foundation stone of the project was laid on December 26, 2020.
