GUWAHATI: The scrutiny process for the upcoming Guwahati Civic polls this year was held on Friday 1st April at the Rabindra Bhawan in Guwahati.

Following the examination of nominations, a total of 208 candidates are in the fray for the upcoming GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporations) elections.

A total of 2028 nominations for GMC polls out of a total nomination of 212 candidates are found to be valid and a total of four nominations were rejected by concerned authorities.

The scrutiny was done under the supervision of the District Election Officer of the Kamrup (M) district and in the presence of Election observers.

A thorough examination of the nominations was performed by the Executive Magistrate and the Assistant Election Officer after which 208 numbers of nominations are found to be valid and 4 invalids.

The names of the candidates whose nominations got rejected include Kamakhya Pandey from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of ward no. 44, Dipak Prasad from Indian National Congress (INC) of ward no. 16, Pinki Borpujari from Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) of ward no. 41 and Madhumita Chakraborty Jana (Independent) of ward no. 4.

Notably, for the GMC elections this year, 50 per cent of seats are reserved for female candidates as per the election commission.

It may be mentioned that a total of 7,97,807 voters will be casting their votes in Guwahati civic elections in 2022 and a total of 780 polling stations have been established in various wards of the city.

Among the total number of voters, 4,00,654 voters are female while 3,97,129 are male voters.

The GMC polls will take place on 22 April 2022 and the counting of votes will be done on the same day of conducting the election.

Meanwhile, the election commission has also fixed the timing for casting the vote as per which the election process will start from 07:30 am in the morning and ends at 04:30 pm in the evening.
