GUWAHATI: Assam Agarwood Planters’ and Traders’ Association president Jehirul Islam has welcomed the Cabinet decision on agar tree. The State Cabinet on Monday decided to set up an International Trade Centre for Agar tree at Golaghat. Islam said: “The existing Act on agar trade in the State had been a headache for Agar planters and traders in the State. We did move the Chief Minister, the Finance Minister, the Forest Minister and the Industries Minister on this issue. They assured us of doing the needful. Now they’ve softened the Act as assured. This is a welcome gesture.” Islam said: “According to the new rules, a person keen to plant Agar tree in 35 bighas of land won’t have to take any permission. No permission will also be needed for felling Agar trees. This will benefit all Agarwood Planters and traders in the State. This will help Assam Agar scent to occupy a special place in the international market.”
