Assam By-elections: AGP to Support BJP, Official Announcement Soon

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The AGP will extend support to the BJP in the next month’s by-elections in the four Assembly constituencies of Sonari, Rangapara, Jania and Ratabari.

The by-elections in the four constituencies will be held on October 21.

The AGP minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury in the Sarbananda Sonowal ministry on Thursday visited Jania and verbally urged the party workers in the constituency to extend whole-hearted support to the BJP in the by-elections. Sources said the central committee of AGP has already arrived at a consensus to support the BJP. The AGP will soon make the official announcement on the issue.

“The AGP leaders and workers will also join poll campaigns for the BJP candidates,” the source said.

The by-elections in the four Assembly constituencies has been necessitated in the event of some of the sitting MLAs who contested the Lok Sabha poll coming out winner, leaving their seats in the said Assembly constituencies were vacated. Sonari MLA Topon Gogoi won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, while Rangapara MLA Pallab Lochan Das won the Tezpur LS seat, Ratabari MLA Kripanath Mallah in Karimganj LS seat, and Congress’ Jania MLA Abdul Khaleque came out winner from Barpeta Lok Sabha seat, creating the need for by-elections in the said constituencies.

The Election Commission has fixed September 30 as the last date for filing nominations for the ensuing be-elections. October 3 will be the last date for withdrawal of candidatures. While the elections will be held on October 21, counting of votes will be conducted on October 24.
