Assam CPI hails 'farmers' victory' after rollback of farm laws

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Terming the repeal of the farm laws as a decisive victory for the agitating farmers, the Assam State council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) said that the decision had proved that "the united struggle against the government" can force it to yield, which is a good sign for democracy.

Congratulating the farmers across the country following the Centre's decision to withdraw the three farm laws, the CPI state unit said that the relentless struggle forced the government to repeal the laws. The historic victory which they achieved through a prolonged and determined struggle was supported by all sections of the society but it must be ensured that the laws are repealed by Parliament in its coming winter session, the party said.

Hailing the decision, secretary of the Assam State council of CPI, Munin Mahanta said, "The Prime Minister should answer why the government took so long for this announcement. The struggle already claimed the lives of 700 plus farmers and led to the brutality of Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh. The government had tried every trick to suppress the movement, but all such attempts failed. In the seven-year rule of the Modi government, it has been forced by the agitation to roll back its decision."

"The CPI Assam State council demands compensation of Rs 50 lakh to every farmer who lost their lives during the movement. We also welcome the decision of the central leaders not to withdraw agitation till the laws are not withdrawn in the winter session of the Parliament," he said.

He further said, "The farmers of the country have shown that the united struggle against the government can force it to yield and strengthen democracy. It is time to learn from the struggle and intensify our fight against the Labour Code, Electricity Bill 2021, Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The party expressed its gratitude to the agitating farmers, youth, students, agricultural labourers, women and working classes who supported the farmers' protest. The Prime Minister should also consider the other demands of the farmers like the repeal of the Electricity Bill 2021, legal protection to MSP and repeal of Labour Codes."
