GUWAHATI: The State Excise Department earns revenue amounting to around Rs 160 crore per month from authorized liquor vendors.

According to sources in the Excise Department, around 70 per cent of this revenue comes from sales of luxury brands of alcohol.

The sources said that the department earned revenue of Rs 1,930 crore in fiscal 2021-2022. However, this marked a decrease from the revenue earned in 2020-2021, which was Rs 2030 crore. The corresponding figure for 2019-2020 was Rs 1,600 crore.

During the lockdown in 2020, the Excise Department had increased the tax. The Government had claimed that 25 per cent tax was increased in all liquor segments but in the upper segments it turned out to be around 50 cent to 65 cent.

It may be mentioned that the luxury brand of liquor ranges in price from Rs 271 to Rs 400 per bottle, the elegant brand ranges from Rs 400 to Rs 600 per bottle, the premium brand ranges from Rs 600 to Rs 1,000 per bottle and all other bottles costing more than Rs 1,000 falls under the classic premium brand.
