GUWAHATI: The Assam government has constituted a five- member committee to draft an appropriate legislation to ban polygamy and other related issues.

The state government’s Political department issued a notification, vide which it was announced that the Governor has assented to the formation of a committee for the purpose of drafting a legislation for banning polygamy and other related issues like ‘tackling inter religious marriage by false identity, the role of Kaji in child marriage etc.’

The order also named the five committee members selected for the purpose, including the chairman and member secretary. The list includes the names of Devajit Saikia, Advocate General of Assam, as the chairman; Assam Director General of Police G.P Singh as member; Senior Addl. Advocate General of Assam Nalin Kohli as member; Legal Remembrancer and Secretary, Judicial Department, Assam, Romen Baruah as a member; and Biswajit Pegu, secretary, Home and Political department as member secretary.

The committee has to take all suggestions into consideration while preparing the draft. It also has to go through three petitions which are opposed to the legislation, if necessary, to personally hear the viewpoints of the petitioners involved, the order says.

Moreover, the committee is mandated with meeting the chairman of the Law Commission in connection with the draft, it is stated in the order. The five- member committee has to submit the draft legislation within 45 (forty-five) days of the issue of the notification.
