STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 5: MyGov Assam, an innovative platform to build a partnership between citizens and Government with the help of technology for growth and development, seeks suggestions from citizens of the State to develop and create awareness on traditional weaving and handloom.

Last date of submitting suggestions is slated on October 31. Assam has a rich tradition of weaving and handloom. It has been practiced and exists in the Assamese society since ancient times and occupies a position of pride. The Assamese women, irrespective of caste, class, community or status, used to weave clothes and garments for the entire family. Even the ancient scriptures like the Kalika Puran have descriptions of uses of silk from cocoons and dyeing techniques. The handloom sector also holds multiple opportunities for commercial production. It is the largest sector in terms of economic activities and employment generation, next only to agriculture.

In times of increasing inclination towards mechanization and standardization, handloom provides a refreshing change through its mesmerizing manual skills. It is one of the most vibrant aspects of our cultural heritage, a communiqué said.
