Guwahati: The Kamrup (Metro) administration has demarcated the residential area of the Governor of Assam (Raj Bhawan) located atop the Kharguli Hills as a Containment Zone following the detection of COVID-19 positive cases within the campus. Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu has directed the circle officer to seal the marked area with immediate effect.

According to reports, a pump operator and a soldier stationed in the campus tested positive for the virus, raising the alarm in the Governor's residence.

The boundaries of this new Containment Zone area are as follows:

North: Hotel Belle View

South: Bonkonwar Nagar

East: Borthakur Clinic

West: MG Road

This order is made under the regulations the Assam COVID-19 Regulations, 2020 and shall be effective from 4th July 2020 until further order. "Any violation of this order will attract action under the provisions of The Assam COVID-19 Regulations, 2020, The Disaster Management Act-2005, The Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, and other relevant laws of the nation", the DC's order stated.

This development has come to light in the wake of the steady and alarming rise in COVID-19 cases in the Kamrup (M) area that has necessitated yet another lockdown in the capital area. The lockdown that came into effect on June 28, was brought into effect against the discovery of a multitude of COVID-19 positive cases in the city that did not have any travel history whatsoever. In the first phase of the lockdown, all shops -- apart from ones related to medical services -- have been closed down.

Amid the sharp spike, the total number of positive cases in Assam has risen to 9,434, out of which 3,311 are active cases. So far, 14 people in the state have lost their lives due to COVID.

Meanwhile, India's COVID-19 tally has touched 6,48,315 with the biggest single-day increase of 22,771 cases, the latest data from the Union Health Ministry shows. The country also witnessed 442 deaths during the period, taking the total number of death count to 18,655. The number of recoveries stands at 3,94,227. The recovery rate has improved to 60.80 percent.
