Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) To Carry Out Drive Soon

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) is going to carry out a drive against a section of junior colleges that are being run without permission in the State. The Council has already formed a committee for the proposed drive.

Addressing a press conference at his office here on Monday, AHSEC Chairperson Dayananda Borgohain said: “There’re reports in a section of the media that some junior colleges in the State are being run without any permission. Such reports have made it imperative to conduct such a drive. We’ve already formed a committee for an investigation into the matter.”

Borgohain also said: “We’re contemplating on doing away with the system of alternative English. There’s general English that’s compulsory for all students. It so happens that many students take Alternative English instead of Modern Indian Languages (MIL). This makes them read two English language subjects at the cost of their own tongues. This is unfortunate. We’re going to take the consent of all stakeholders, including the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), universities and educationists on this issue. We’re going to collect 5,000 signatures on queries with options of responses limited to ‘yes’ and ‘no’ on this issue from colleges and higher secondary schools. We’re also going to discuss the issue of the system of ten merit list in HS examinations through seminars.”
