GUWAHATI: The Inland Water Transport (IWT) Authority increased the tariffs on February 1, which have made commuters unhappy. Even North Guwahati has submitted a memorandum with the Inland Water Transport authority regarding decreasing the fare as labourers and other small workers are facing problems. There will be a meeting over the higher fares, which were raised in accordance with the 2022 index. However, the officials have stated that it is a minimal rate in accordance with the vessels and the maintenance costs. The boats are reportedly extending service properly, but the maintenance still requires attention, and this increase is expected after years.

It should be noted that there are three ferry lines that go from North Guwahati to Guwahati and vice versa. The three ghats and stops, Maidhyam Khanda, Maz Gaon, and Raja Duar, are where the ferry service departs from north Guwahati and returns to Guwahati at various times specified by the IWT, Assam authorities. When the IWTRA (Inland Water Transport Regulatory Authority) decides to act on the memorandum submited by North Guwahati residents to further adjust the rate, the passengers indicated they will only pay for the ferry service tickets. The passengers stated that they will use the ferry services without any tickets till a decision is made regarding the cost.
