Guwahati: The brother of 2012 batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer Inam Ul-Haq-Mengnoo is said to have joined a militant organization in Kashmir as per the intelligence sources.

Mengnoo is currently posted as Superintendent of Police (SP) of Hamren police district.

Shams-Ul-Haq Mengnoo, an Unani doctor, and brother of the IPS officer, has been reported missing from Shopian since May and intelligence agencies are of the opinion that he may have joined a banned militant group.

IPS officer Mengnoo, who hails from Shopian district of Kashmir, cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) in 2012 with a rank of 280 and was allotted the Indian Police Service (IPS). His brother was pursuing a course in Unani medicine from Institute of Asian Medical Sciences, Srinagar.

Highly educated Kashmiri youths joining various militant groups have become a new headache for the intelligence agencies tasked with winning over the youngsters to the mainstream. Earlier this year, 26-year-old Mannan Bashir Wani, who was pursuing a doctorate in earth science-geology from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), had joined militant outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahedin.

In April this year, a soldier with the Indian Army was reported to have deserted his force to join a Kashmiri militant organization.

Official sources are of the view that the year 2018 might end up as the worst year in terms of the number of youths joining various terror groups.

According to report, in 2017, a total of 126 youths had picked up guns.
