STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Demanding socio-economic security and to prevent violence over women, Assam Mahila Sangha (AMS), Guwahati District Committee staged protest here at Lakhminath Bezbaruah Chowk, Guwahati Club on Tuesday.

Claiming that women in Assam, especially those from poor economic background are becoming victims of the current price hike and the unhygienic system of food and health, AMS Guwahati district committee demanded decrease of price of essential goods, necessary steps to prevent death rate of pregnant and new born babies, assuring food security for children and also assuring security for children and women, to stop exploitation over women. Besides these their other demands include to secure jobs of those women engaging in unorganized sector and to assure salary of Rs. 18,000.

State Secretary of AMS Asomi Gogoi said, “Today, Assam Mahila Sangha is observing Demand Day in different parts of the state in order to assure socio economic rights of women. Women have no security at all be it in home or workplace. Women are being exploited at different stages. Recently, the government has given NGO’s the responsibility of mid-day meal. It directly reflects how women have no security of jobs. We oppose to it and we demand healthy and hygienic food for children. To our surprise the government has given the mid day meal responsibility even to some blacklisted NGOs. We want that the government should take initiative to stop economic and social harassment over women.”
