Assam man participates virtually in United Nations event in Geneva

GUWAHATI: Hirok Jyoti Borah of Assam represented India (virtually) at the 49th Human Rights Council of the United Nations in Geneva from February 28 to April 1.

Borah participated in the General Debate as well as Interactive Dialogue sessions. He raised issues regarding the rights of the indigenous people, especially their economic, social and cultural rights. He raised the demand during discussion under the General Debate Agenda-10 on technical assistance and capacity building, the Assamese language be included in Unicode. He further requested that the Bordowa Than in the Nagaon district be enlisted among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.

During discussions under General Debate Agenda-4 on Human Rights issues, Borah pointed out the brutal killings during the anti-CAA movement, fake encounters and dark side of the AFSPA. He requested the council to provide justice to the people who faced human rights violations during the anti-CAA agitation and to amend the AFSPA.

Borah claimed that after the release of a video from the 49th Human Rights Council, the AFSPA was partially removed from certain areas of some Northeastern States. Borah also appealed for implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, ensuring women's safety and stopping of discrimination against people from the Northeastern people for their appearance etc.
