Assam Panchayat Polls : Campaign for phase-I picks up

GUWAHATI: The campaign for the first phase of the panchayat poll has picked up momentum with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stepping into the campaign trail. State Election Commissioner (SEC) HN Bora, on the other hand, is camping in upper Assam reviewing preparations for the rural poll.

Bora, who reviewed the panchayat poll preparations in Tinsukia district on Monday, told The Sentinel that more nomination papers were filed for the second phase of the panchayat poll than that of its first phase. According to him, so far complaints against violation of model poll code are very few.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister addressed election rallies at a number of areas in Jorhat and Sivasagar districts on Monday. In most of the rallies he highlighted the corruption in the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) during the 15-year-long Congress rule in the State. He made it a point that the last Congress regime had issued around 4.5 lakh fake job cards.

Not lagging behind, minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also addressed election rallies at various areas in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts.
