Assam Police seized drugs worth over Rs 597 crore in last 13 months

GUWAHATI: The Assam Police seized various narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances worth over Rs 597.03 crore in the 13-month period between May 10, 2021 and June 12, 2022.

According to police sources, the seized substances included 102.318 kg of heroin; 26,638.52332 kg of ganja; 187.4227652 kg of opium; 2,67,917 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup; 39,41,065 tablets/capsules of narcotic items, 4.80975 kg of morphine; 3,314 kg poppy straws; 15.423 kg of crystal methamphetamine; 0.30901 kg of cocaine; 213.93500 kg of cannabis plant; 0.56300 kg of tramadol; and 10 kg of raw opium bud.

This apart, 381 vehicles used by the traffickers were also seized during the 13-month period, along with cash amounting to over Rs 2.76 crore. The police also seized foreign currency worth Rs 27,965 and fake Indian currency notes worth Rs 36,800.

During the period, cannabis cultivation was destroyed in an area of around 31.3 bighas and opium cultivation was destroyed in an area of around 648 bighas.

The period saw the arrest of 5,330 persons in connection with 3,173 cases.
