GUWAHATI: The Assam Police has uncovered the presence of three jihadi modules in the State, which were linked.
Disclosing this before the media on Saturday, Additional DGP (Special Branch) Hiren Chandra Nath said that all three modules have links with the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
It may be mentioned that the ABT is an Al Qaeda-inspired Islamic extremist group in Bangladesh and it is a front group for the Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent.
Talking about leads discovered during the ongoing campaign against jihadi elements, Nath said that Harun Rashid, who was arrested recently, had come from Bangladesh two years ago. Thereafter Rashid went to Deoband in Uttar Pradesh via West Bengal. Rashid interacted with trained jihadis in Deoband for some time. Then he came to Barpeta to execute the jihadi agenda. Rashid posed as an orphan during his stay in Barpeta, he said.
The Additional DGP informed that the jihadi game-plan involves gradual indoctrination of vulnerable people. Once the targets are adequately brainwashed over a period of time, the jihadis utilize them for carrying out various nefarious activities.
Nath said that some Bengali pamphlets etc., were recovered by the police from Barpeta, which disseminated information regarding the concept of jihad and how to train to become a jihadi.
On the other hand, in the case of the other jihadi who was arrested from Tripura, seven bank passbooks were recovered from an underground hiding place in the garage of his house in Bongaigaon.
Asked about the ULFA's claim that the Assam Police had sent a spy to their camp, Nath said that a one-sided narrative is going on at the moment and it is difficult to say anything without proper analysis.
He said that around 80 youths had gone to join the ULFA in 2017, 2018 and 2019, but around 49 of them returned to the mainstream.
