GUWAHATI: The president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Bhupen Kumar Borah has constituted a seven-member committee headed by party working president Rana Goswami to immediately visit the Batadroba constituency and take stock of the current situation relating to the mob attack on the Batadroba Police Station and other public and private property.

The committee will also look into the reported demolition of houses of local people by the authorities following the incident. Further, the committee has been asked to the matter in detail, including interacting with local people, to find out the root cause of the incident.

The committee has been directed to submit its report to the APCC president within two days.

Apart from Goswami, the committee includes MLAs Nurul Huda, Abdul Batin Khandakar and Sibamoni Bora, Nagaon DCC president Suresh Bora, APCC general secretary Swapan Kumar Mandal and Nagaon municipal board ward commissioner Abdul Kadir.

JUDICIAL PROBE DEMANDED: Meanwhile, the Assam State Committee of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) has expressed deep concern over the incident of arson in the police station in the early hours of Saturday and the alleged nuisance and torture carried out by the police among the villagers on Sunday after a youth from Dhing's Salnabari village died in police custody at the Batadroba Police Station.

The party has demanded a judicial inquiry into all the incidents and also demanded strict action against the erring police officers who have taken over the rule of law as well as the miscreants who burned the police station.

A statement issued by the CPM State committee stated that according to most media reports, a youth named Sofikul Islam, a fish vendor from Salnabari village, was arrested by the police on the night of May 20 and brought to the Batadroba police station. The statement alleged that the police demanded a duck and Rs 10,000 from Sofikul's wife for his release and they beat him up because she was unable to provide the demanded money.
