GUWAHATI: At a time when the government keeps talking about 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', Assam witnessed a high number of crimes against women in 2021, with a total of such 30,600 cases being registered between January and November, with relevant data for December yet to be collected.

According to information collected from the Crime Investigation Department, crimes against children were also significantly high, with a total of 7,200 cases being registered in the State during the January-November period.

As many as 1,110 murder cases were registered in the State during the same period. It is pertinent to note that despite the talk about smart police, Guwahati city itself witnessed several murders within a short period. These include the killing of a minor girl at Uzan Bazar, the murder of a woman by her neighbour at Beltola, the double homicide of an elderly couple at Beltola and the murder of a priest by his wife under Latasil Police Station.

Talking to The Sentinel, a senior police official said, "There are many reasons for an increase in crimes and it is difficult to pinpoint one factor. In case of crimes against women and children, we conduct various awareness campaigns in different sectors. We even conducted a Virtual Awareness drive during the lockdown. Further, we train Village Defence Party members to prevent crimes in rural areas."

"2022 is a new year and we will work to reduce the crime rates in Assam in the all-India context. Our police always strive to prevent any sort of crime and we expect fewer incidents of crime in the State in the coming days," he added.
