Assam State Primary Teachers' Association Stage Statewide Protests

GUWAHATI: Members of the Assam State Primary Teachers' Association (ASPTA) staged statewide protests on Tuesday in support of their various demands, including restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
Members of the ASPTA staged a one-hour protest in the offices of the District Elementary Education Officers (DEEOs). However, classes were not disrupted due to the protest and teachers of single-teacher schools did not participate in the protest.
ASPTA had submitted a memorandum with 80,000 signatures to the President, Prime Minister and Chief Minister on Teachers' Day on September 5 in support of its demands. The signature campaign was organized under the banner of the All India Primary Teachers' Federation.
Besides restoration of the OPS, the ASPTA's demands include regularization of the services of all contractual teachers, deletion of 'anti-teachers' provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, stoppage of public-private partnership in the education sector and nationwide implementation of the 7th Pay Commission's recommendations.
In the next phase of agitation, the ASPTA would stage a dharna at Directorate of Elementary Education (DEE) at Kahilipara on November 15. In January, 2023 during the session of the Parliament, the All India Primary Teachers' Federation will also stage a dharna in support of their demands.
