GUWAHATI: There has been a significant increase in the crimes against women in Assam. According to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2021, the rate of total crimes against women in Assam was 168. 3 per cent. This is much higher than the national rate of crimes against women – 64.5 per cent. The crime rate is calculated as per one lakh of population.

The total number of cases of crimes against women registered in 2021 in the State was 29,046. In 2020, the number of cases was 26,352. According to the NRCB data, Assam is followed by Delhi which recorded 147.6 per cent rate of crimes against women while Odisha recorded 137.8 per cent.

As per the data, in 2021, 46 cases of murder with rape/gang rape were registered in Assam. In these 46 cases, the number of female victims is 47. The number of dowry death cases registered is 198 and number of victims in these cases is 198. The total number of cases of kidnapping and abduction of women is 5,739 while the number of victims in these cases is 5,866.

The number of rape cases registered is 1,733 and the number of victims is 1,835. The total number of human trafficking cases registered is 68 and the number of victims is 169. A total of 3,294 cases of kidnapping and abduction with the intention of forceful marriage while the number of victims under this category is 3,362. Under the 'Assault on women with the intention of outraging her modesty', 4,499 cases were registered and the number of victims in these cases is 4,511. Under the 'Kidnapping for ransom' category, seven cases were registered and the number of victims is seven.
