GUWAHATI, June 18: Apart from recurring artificial flood during monsoon, the live wires hanging around and exposed transformers in various streets of Guwahati has equally been alarming the city residents as the death toll out of electrocution is rising every year. Despite concern raised by the city dwellers, the authority seems quite indifferent to the fatalities cause by the phenomenon.

Earlier, the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner (M) Virendra Mittal in a meeting held with the Guwahati Development Department, Forest Department, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, and the Assam Power Department discussed in length about the live wires hanging around in the streets and accordingly ordered the Assam Power Department to initiate preventive measures in order to avert incidents like electrocution.

During the meeting, Mittal also asked the power department to cut down the branches of the tree in collaboration with the Forest Department. However, the DC’s order went in vain as no such progress has been seen yet. The live wires in various streets across the city are still hanging around with exposed transformers.

Last year, a total of 33 people lost their lives throughout the state due to electrocution. In Zoo Road alone, two individuals died of electrocution. The areas under danger are Rajgarh, Zoo Road, Santipur, and Lachit Nagar. Despite of all such ungrateful events, why the Power Department is still waiting to step up preventive measures is a mystery best known to themselves.
