Beyond The Call of Duty!

GUWAHATI: Even now there are a few who show commitment to jobs they are assigned to above and beyond what is expected from them. For such people, work is worship. Meet such a man in Guwahati.

Guwahati city was badly lashed by a thunderstorm at noon on Sunday when people were seen running helter-skelter for cover. The thunderstorm, together with lightning, made people to run for safety. However, Mithun Das – traffic constable number 447 hailing from Karbi Anglong – was seen standing on the roofless traffic point at Basistha Chariali, and doing his duty. He was thoroughly drenched. ‘Hats of the traffic policeman’ was heard from all those who were either running for cover or taking shelter in roadside shops.

However, someone clicked a photograph of the policeman on traffic duty for his beyond-call-of-duty attitude and uploaded the picture in the social media. Soon the picture went viral with people showering praise on him.

When asked by The Sentinel if he was not afraid of while doing his duty amidst thunderstorm and the engulfing darkness, Mithun Das said: “Even as I was afraid of, I had to do the duty. Duty first! Since darkness was engulfing, the situation was fraught with more accidents. How can a man on duty desert the traffic point?” A few days back, the traffic point was hit by a dumber, smashing its roof. However, higher-ups in the department are yet to get the roof erected afresh.
