Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Aims To Sweep The Polls

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The ruling BJP has set the target of winning three out of four assembly seats where the by-elections will be held on October 21.

The by-elections will be held at Sonari, Rangapara, Ratabari and Jania constituencies. While the BJP is fully confident of winning Sonari, Rangapara and Ratabari assembly seats, Jania is not a thrust area for the ruling party.

The by-elections in these Assembly constituencies has been necessitated in the event of some of the sitting MLAs who contested the Lok Sabha poll in April this year came out winner and they left their seats in the said constituencies vacated.

Sonari BJP MLA Topon Kumar Gogoi won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, while Rangapara BJP MLA Pallab Lochan Das won the Tezpur LS seat, Ratabari BJP MLA Kripanath Mallah and Congress’ Jania MLA Abdul Khaleque came out winner from Karimganj and Barpeta Lok Sabha constituencies respectively.

Even though campaigning for the by-elections has not yet started due to the Durga puja celebrations, candidates in the fray are in touch with their voters. The campaigning will begin by the end of this week and the AGP and BPF, the partners in the ruling alliance will campaign for the BJP candidates.

The ensuing by-elections and elections of civic bodies including GMC and BTC elections (scheduled to be held within this year) will build the foundation of the ruling BJP’s mission to win 100 plus seats in the 2021 Assembly polls in Assam.

While the by- elections will be held on October 21, counting of votes will be conducted on October 24.
