Bicycle rally on World Population Week

GUWAHATI, July 11: On the eve of the World Population Week, the National Health Mission, Kamrup (M) and the Kamrup (M) district administration jointly organized a bicycle rally on Wednesday to spread awareness about family planning and the importance of population control.

Inaugurated by Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal, the rally was kicked off at Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) playground and culminated at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH), Panbazaar, a government communiqué said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mittal highlighted the need to control population in view of shrinking resources. He also spoke about carrying out intensive awareness campaigns to sensitize the target population about using family planning methods. He hoped that this bicycle rally would be able to spread the message of limiting one’s family for holistic development of society.

Mittal observed that unchecked population growth has resulted in social imbalances and all sections of society must join hands for controlling the population for contributing to the nation-building process. He also spoke about the benefits of regular bicycling and urged the people to adopt cycling as a means for achieving good health.

Meanwhile, an awareness meeting was also held highlighting the World Population Day at MMCH, where Retired Consultant, Maternal Health of NHM, Assam PN Bora spoke on the dangers of population explosion and how adopting family planning methods can help in managing the size of the family, the communique added.
