BJP takes U-turn on NRC: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has reiterated that the maxim of the Assam Accord is deportation of foreigners from the State, but the BJP in Assam is doing politics on this issue.

Addressing the media at his official residence here on Monday, Gogoi said, “In his affidavit to the Supreme Court on India in 2013, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the NRC should be updated in accordance with the cut-off date of the NRC. However, he has taken a U-turn now. Raising the issue of 1966 as the base year, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is trying to make the Assam Accord redundant.”

“The government has not taken its stand clear on the NRC as yet. If former State NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela was involved in corruption, why hasn’t the government arrested him?” Gogoi questioned.

Gogoi said, “Himanta Biswa Sarma is out to derail the anti-CAA agitation that has many takers in the State now. Apart from students and youth, the women of the State have taken to the streets. Such a situation has led the government to resort to a misleading campaign.”
