BJP Used Bogibeel bridge Inauguration For Political Purpose: Congress

GUWAHATI: The Opposition Congress on Wednesday accused the ruling BJP of using the inauguration of Bogibeel bridge, the country’s longest road-cum-rail bridge for political purpose which was an ominous sign for the democracy.

Leader of Congress Legislature Party Debabrata Saikia while addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan here on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi lacked political culture as former Prime ministers HD Deve Gowda and Dr Manmohan Singh were not invited to the inauguration function.

“Many other elected leaders including former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi were not invited to the event. Bogibeel Bridge Project was a part of Assam Accord 1985 and was sanctioned in the year 1997-98. The foundation stone of the Project was laid by the then Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda”, Saikia said. In 2007, the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh declared the bridge as national project and arrangement was made for requisite fund for the project, Saikia said. On other hand Saikia also accused Modi of forgetting his 2014 Lok Sabha promises of reviving Jagiroad Paper Mill in Nagaon district and Panchagram Paper Mill in Cachar district. “The Rs 1,900 crore revival package for the paper mills is awaiting nod from the Prime Minister Office. We want to know what happened to that promise,” he said.
