Bordeori of Ugratata Devalaya Files Case

GUWAHATI: The stolen idol of historic Ugratata Devalaya is yet to be recovered, but a case has been filed by the Bordeori of the devalaya over a telephone call.

A case (287/18 u/s 419) was filed by Devalaya’s Bordeori Jiten Sarma in Latasil police station on December 2. Sarma said in his FIR that a person claiming himself as one from the Special Branch (SB) of the State Police had told him that he (Sarma) would be interrogated in connection with the theft of the idol of the Devalaya. Sarma did give the number of the mobile phone from which the call came to the police. The call was received by one Utpal Bhattacharya.

During its preliminary investigation, the police found that the man who telephoned the Bordeori is none other than the Devalaya’s former secretary Paresh Kalita.

“I telephoned the Bordeori on December 1. However, what he says is not true. A few days back the SIT (Special Investigation Team) formed by the police for the investigation of the theft case took my statement on the theft. The SIT asked me on the diagram of the idol. I told the police that since the Bordeori is one who does all rituals at the Devalaya, he is the right person to give such a diagram. The police told me that they tried to contact the Bordeori but failed to contact him as he had gone to Nalbari for the Raax Festival there. I telephoned the Bordeori in that connection only,” the police quoted Paresh Kalita as telling them.
