GUWAHATI: Almost 60 per cent work of the Botanical Garden in the Old Jail premises in Fancy Bazar has been completed. The entire Rs 31-crore project executed by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is expected to be completed by the first half of 2023.

The Botanical Garden will include two ponds, a Machan tower, a yoga centre, a central plaza and a corner for jail memorial. Spread over 54 bighas, the Botanical Garden will have different species of plants with botanical importance. A GMDA official said that around 25 bighas will be used for the garden area. Out of the two ponds, one has already been dug while work on the second pond was going on. The horticulture work will start within this month. The target is to complete the Botanical Garden by April next year, said the official.

In the middle of a busy area like Fancy Bazar, this Botanical Garden – when completed– will be a place where people can relax in a green and clean environment.
