Brahmaputra Boat Tragedy: Cotton University Students Stage Protest, Demand Better Services

Guwahati, Sept 6: Students of the Cotton University on Thursday took out a rally here demanding better mode of communication between Guwahati and North Guwahati. It may be pointed out that two students of the university, Ankita Baruah and Dimpy Borah, both 17 and students of class XI, have died in the boat mishap.

The residents of North Guwahati also took out a rally slamming the Government and the Inland Water Transport department over the boat capsize incident. Students of the Handique Girls’ College also joined the protest.

22 people have been rescued by a joint rescue operation by NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army along with Assam Police and civil administration. Presently search operations are on in Brahmaputra. An aerial recce is also in progress.

“Till now, we have received missing report of two persons, for which search and rescue operations are on,” stated the Assam Police.

The rally was taken out near the Sukreswar Temple here which resulted in a massive traffic snarls across the city.

Meanwhile, the people have demanded immediate construction of a bridge from Guwahati to North Guwahati for better communication.

The boat that capsized was on its way to North Guwahati on Wednesday when the engine stopped functioning before reaching its destination. The boat hit an on-going water supply project construction before it sank.
