‘Burying’ husband alive?

Doctor, Khabarstan secretary held for fake insurance claims

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 14: At a time when innocent youths are lynched in the name of child lifters, guiltless women are brutally raped and killed in trains, a woman identified as Akhlima Begum has a different plot to shock the entire State. According to police sources, the woman from Ward No 6 of Doboka, Nogaon made an attempt to prove her living husband dead in vain by collecting fake documents to claim her husband’s insurance policies.

Police sources said that that Akhlima Begun claimed an insurance policy worth Rs 57 lakh from EXIDE Life Insurance and another worth Rs 80 lakh from HDFC Life on March 21 that were insured in the name of her husband, Samsul Haque Choudhury (40).

On receiving her claim, the insurance companies initiated cross-verification of her claims and realized that the entire move was supplemented by fake documents and her husband is alive. Following the gross fraudulent act, both the companies lodged FIRs 15 days ago at the Paltan Bazar police station and two separate cases (Case No. 586/18 and Case No. 627/18 u/s 120 (B)/ 420/468/47) were registered against the woman.

In connection with the case, the Paltan Bazar police arrested Dr Kamal Chandra Gogoi, Deputy Superintendent of Kandali Model Hospital, Dabaka and another involved Hilal Ahmed (40), Secretary, Gasdala Khabarstan on July 13. Allegedly, Dr Gogoi produced the fake death certificate stating that the insured Samsul died under his treatment, while Hilal produced another certificate stating that he himself conducted the last rites of the insured at the Khabarstan.

Ironically, sniffing a severe consequence, claimant Akhlima has already availed an interim bail from the Gauhati High Court safeguarding herself from arrest till July 18 next while Samsul surrendered at Paltan Bazar police station on Saturday.

The police source added that there are more policies insured in the name of Samsul which worth not less than Rs 7 crore altogether. Samsul insured the policies showing himself as a businessman. However, he is a manual labourer by profession.
