2,813 people killed in 6,737 road accidents in Assam in 2020: NCRB report

GUWAHATI: Careless driving and overspeeding are two of the main reasons for the road accidents that took place in Assam in 2020 according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

According to the NCRB data, overspeeding was responsible for the highest number of road accidents in the State last year. Total 3,293 cases of road accidents due to overspeeding were registered in which 2,530 people were injured and 1,377 people died. Negligent or careless driving was behind 1,169 cases of road accidents registered last year in the State in which 893 people were injured while 462 people died. Due to driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol, 491 road accidents took place in 2020 in which 345 people sustained injuries and 183 people lost their lives. Due to adverse weather conditions, 902 road accidents took place in which 578 people were injured and 472 people lost their lives.

In 96 mishaps caused by animal crossing, 65 people were injured and 39 died. Lack of road infrastructure resulted in 180 accidents and 62 fatalities while 128 people were injured. Vehicles parked on road shoulders claimed 34 lives while 33 were injured in 70 road accidents.

Total 271 road mishaps were caused by defects in mechanical condition of motor vehicles in which 322 people were injured and 106 died. Twelve people died in road accidents due to the driver's fatigue. Total 55 such accident cases were registered in which 41 people were injured. Total 33 people died and 46 were injured in 110 road accidents where the cause of accident was not known and 33 people died and 84 people were injured in 100 road accidents due to other causes. As per the NCRB data, total 6,737 cases of road accidents were registered in 2020 in Assam. In these road accidents 5,065 people were injured (4,191 males and 874 females) while 2,813 people died (2,401 males and 412 females).

The report showed one case of accident due to unmanned railway crossing in which one person died.
