GUWAHATI: The Department of Tribal Affairs (Plains) has given 54 computer sets to the AATS (All Assam Tribal Sangha) for use in each of its 53 service centres for the identification of STs. The AATS has 53 district committees. Each of the committees will accommodate a service centre.

Talking to The Sentinel, AATS secretary general Aditya Khakhlari said, "According to Mission Bhumiputra, the deputy commissioners will issue caste certificates - ST, SC and OBC - online. However, the onus of identifying the persons getting such certificates lies with the respective castes concerned. Organizations of the castes concerned will identify the credentials of the applicants whose parents do not have such certificates. Candidates can apply for caste or OBC certificates with their identification-related documents. The deputy commissioners concerned will issue the certificates with their digital signatures. AATS has 53 district units that will have a service centre each. Besides identifying applicants seeking ST certificates and their parents, the AATS service centres will also be service centres from where the candidates can apply for ST certificates. Computer sets are a must for each of the 53 service centres. Tribal Affairs (Plains) Minister Ranoj Pegu provided us 54 computers today by taking that in view."

Kharhlari appealed to the minister to recognize the service centres by the government. The minister assured the AATS of taking measures toward that end.
