GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Saturday appealed to the people of the State to celebrate the coming Rongali Bihu by remaining at their homes in view of the prevailing COVID-19 scenario across the country as well abroad.

With an aim to set an example before making the appeal the influential students’ organization which led the Assam Movement, has already decided not to hold its popular Mukoli Bihu at the historic Judges’ Field in the city this year. The Guwahati unit of AASU has been organizing Mukoli Bihu – an open field celebration of Bihu in the Judges’ Field since 1982. The organization will not even hoist the bihu flag at the venue this year.

The AASU’s Mukoli Bihu programme has been acting as a forum for different communities of the State to present their culture and dance forms.

“Coronavirus has emerged as the biggest challenge for the humanity. India as well the rest of the world is fighting a grim battle against COVID. Social distancing is now the only to break the chain of this fatal virus and save the human race. The Rongali Bihu is the greatest festival for the Assamese people. We can understand sentiments and emotions of the Assamese people are associated with the Rongali Bihu. But it is the time to restrain our emotions and celebrate the Bihu without coming out from our homes,” Bipul Rabha, a top functionary of AASU told The Sentinel on Saturday. He said the AASU hopes that the people will show great responsibility by celebrating the bihu with restraints.

The Assam Police on Friday issued some important instructions to the Bihu committees across the State ahead of Rongali Bihu festival. The police has urged the Bihu committees to have an assembly of five people only for hoisting the flag.
