Child Rights Day observed at Rani High School near Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The SOS Children’s Village, under the family strengthening program, celebrated the Child Rights Day at Rani High School, Rani. Nearly 300 children from different locations participated in the program. On this occasion, a rally was organized by the children followed by a mass awareness program and street play.

Attending the occasion as Chief Guest, Basanta Kumar Sharma, Chairman, CWC (Child welfare committee), Kamrup district explained the children on the importance of child rights, education and demerits of Child labor etc.

With an effort to prevent children from losing parental care or from being abandoned, the family strengthening programme has been run in slums and rural areas, within a 30km radius of an SOS Children’s Village. The beneficiaries of this programme are children of the most vulnerable lot, that is, children of widows, single women, and below poverty line (BPL) families. Spanning three to five years, the programme aims to enable families to move out of the vicious cycle of poverty towards greater dignity and self-reliance by ensuring education of children and income generating capacity development of the care givers.
