GUWAHATI: Guwahati is becoming a hotbed for COVID-19 as the number of positive cases is rising at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, the locals still appear to be ignoring the safety guidelines and social distancing norms. The aimless and irrational movement of people on city roads also continues till date. Despite curfew being imposed after 9 pm, public gathering can be witnessed in several places with shops operating over the permissible time. A quick walk around in any area of the city can portray the mockery of the issued guidelines and the way citizens are reacting to the relaxed norms.

Now the question which arises is – Have the police relaxed the measures to contain the violations?

In this regard, Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said, "We are strictly following the government's guidelines. As on June 21, In Guwahati, Rs 14 lakh has been collected from people for not wearing masks. Action will be taken against the shop owners if they are found to be violating the curfew."

Further, Gupta asserted that the overall crime rate in the city has dropped by more than 50 per cent. "The police department is also keeping vigil on the accused persons who have been given bail due to the corona pandemic," he said.
