GUWAHATI: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia said on Sunday that there should not be any controversy on the list of 84 probable candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, clarifying that only those who have asked for a ticket figures on the list.

Saikia said unwanted controversy is being created regarding the list of probable candidates. "This is not the final list. Those that asked for a ticket from the APCC president are included in the list. There is a process and the final list may not include all the probable candidates," he said.

Saikia further said that during the 2011 Assembly elections, there were more than 1000 candidates who applied for the around 126 constituencies the Congress contested in. "The then AICC general secretary and Assam in-charge had written to all those who sought party tickets, asking them to work for the party. He commiserated with those who did not get ticket to contest the elections. This time, we may have to give up some constituencies for the INDIA alliance," he added.

The leader of the opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly reiterated the importance of loyalty to the party, along with the ability to win, for a candidate to get a ticket. "Surely, those who are popular and have the ability to win should get a ticket to contest the polls, especially those that are loyal to the party. The Gandhi family has sacrificed much for the Congress party. Loyalty to the Gandhi family equals loyalty to the party," he said.
