GUWAHATI: The 200 newly-constructed ICUs (Intensive care unit) will be inaugurated at the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) on Tuesday. The new ICU beds have been constructed at the parking area of the GMCH.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the ICUs in the presence of Health Minister Keshab Mahanta. It is to be mentioned that the decision to install the ICUs was taken after the formation of the new government in May 2021. With these 200 ICUs, the GMCH has now a strength of 440 ICUs. The ICUs have been built at a cost of Rs 33.71 crore out of which Rs 20 crore was spent on civil construction, and the remaining Rs 13.71 crore was spent on equipment.

In addition to the ICU beds, a liquid oxygen tank with a capacity of 80,000 litres has been installed on the GMCH premises.

After the inauguration of the ICUs, the COVID affected patients will be admitted here. According to reports, in the days ahead, the GMCH and MMCH (Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital) will slowly stop taking admissions of COVID patients and will be fully operational for general patients. On Monday, the newly built ICUs were inspected by the Health Minister.
